Summer Recap & News
I think it’s time to dust off our good ‘ol blog and let everyone know what we’ve been up to & the plans for the rest of 2011.
We had a great summer. A ridiculously hot and humid summer, but a really good one. Our highlight was spending a couple days in Collingwood and touring Blue Mountain and beaching it at Wasaga.
The biggest reason why the blog was neglected? This little guy:
Yep, we’re adding another little dictator to the mix. It’s a boy, whose name is a secret until he arrives. My due date is October 11th. As I write this I’m sitting at 38 weeks pregnant and I was last told by my doctor that she might induce me in 2 days. WOOT WOOT! So yeah, I’m kinda late with the announcement but on the bright side it means you get to find out his name AND see pics really soon. Also stay tuned for his official newborn photos, which I have been planning since the second line came up on the test. Jake cut me off from Etsy a couple months ago so I can’t wait to debut the new props and hats I’ve been saving for our little guy.
With the usual discomforts associated with pregnancy and the humid temperatures, Bodh Photography took it easy this summer. However, we shot a wedding and an extended family session since you last heard from us. I will blog more about them this fall during my maternity leave, but here’s a little peek:
I am now officially on maternity leave until the new year. We will still be answering emails but please allow a couple days for a reply as newborns tend to be really time consuming creatures. I will start taking on sessions for January 2012 and beyond. Newborns can be booked anytime as we shoot indoors, and family sessions will resume for May 2012 once spring arrives.
For the rest of the fall we will be renovating our studio to install flooring, updating our website and creating some new packages and pricing. Expect a lot of baby related posts as my life will be revolving around a newborn and 21 month old.
Our Packaging – photography packaging
This website has been bookmarked on the computer for a while. I spent months agonizing over HOW to present client orders, and finally decided on “simple and professional”. A client order came in the other day and I thought I’d use it as an opportunity to showcase the new packaging.
This first image shows our disc of digital files, the box for prints up to 8×10 in size, and the image folder for an 11×14 mounted print.
Clients who purchase just a session will go on to purchase prints and products separately. The popular 8×10 and 5×7 print sizes are slipped into a protective plastic bag, and then loosely wrapped in tissue. They are then presented in our aqua box, and finished with our custom sticker and ribbon.
Digital files are always very popular. We created a custom label that is printed directly onto the disc and is secured in a clear jewel case. Our print release accompanies digital files so clients may print unlimited copies of their images.
Our new Digital Packages include all the high-resolution digital files AND, an 11×14 mounted print. The print is sprayed for protection and then mounted on 2mm thick styrene. The benefit of having larger prints mounted is that warping and creasing is avoided.
11×14 mounted prints are slipped into these aqua presentation folders and finished with our custom sticker.
There you have it, Bodh Photography’s packaging. For photographers, if you have any questions about where we got our packaging products, please send us an email and we’d be happy to share!
BODH: the Hair Salon & the Photography Studio
The Open House we had a couple weeks ago went off without a hitch. We even had a reporter from SNAP come take our photo for the February edition! This is embarrassing to admit but here goes: we spent the whole time chatting to clients and visitors that we didn’t take any pictures. Eeek. Ah well, that’s life. So after this week’s wedding consultation we snapped some pics of the new digs.
Our official entrance, which is at the back of the building. We love how the signs came out (thanks Dad!).
I can say quite confidently we are the only business in Guelph to join a hair salon and studio under one roof
. The concept works, as the two trades compliment each other really well. While Jake’s clients are waiting in the lounge, they can view the wall art which showcases our portfolio. We’ve got examples of lustre and metallic prints, a standout and a gallery wrap canvas. Also, it’s really handy to have a space to meet and greet photography clients. A nice new professional touch
My favourite aspect of the space? The WALLPAPER! For $70 a roll (times 4) plus $90 cash on delivery (Eesh), we got our “WOW” factor. My jaw dropped when the UPS guy asked for the C.O.D, and we did in fact freak out over the total cost, but in the end it was totally worth it, and we couldn’t imagine the space without our beloved wallpaper. It’s a relaxing but funky, modern space. It really is our vision for everything associated with Bodh.
What we have of our studio so far is pic #5. Currently the floor, walls and ceiling are painted white. I would’ve taken a pic but honestly all there is to show is a completely stark white space. Why did we do this? No Colour Casts (we’ll thank ourselves later). On-location shooting comprises 95% of our photography so we’re planning to build up our studio equipment slowly. Also, we just spent the big bucks on renovating the space so we’ve got some major saving to do. On my Birthday and Christmas list for 2011: backdrop stand, lighting equipment, and a couple backdrops.
Pictures #6 and #7 are the lounge. We actually got to test it out with some great clients who met us at the studio to book their wedding (July 2011!). We brought our iPad to showcase our portfolio and had fun discussing their plans for their big day. Great first consultation!
So that’s that. Any questions about anything you see in the above images, or the process of renovating a space for a salon/studio, just email us at bodhphotography@gmail.com
P.S. - Anyone who’s interested, you can find the wallpaper HERE.
gift certificates
Our gift certificates arrived a couple days ago. We got them done in the standard semi-gloss so it’s easy to fill them in for clients. As usual our lab did a great job, and even threw in an extra 10 certificates of each design for us (awesome!). They really help unite the two businesses and we’re excited to offer them for the first time at the Open House.
Hopefully you’ll think of these the next time you’re trying to decide on what to give for that special occasion. They make excellent baby shower gifts (what new Mom wouldn’t love to have newborn photos done?!) and Birthday or Holiday gifts for family and friends. They can be bought for any amount, or you can opt to purchase the full cost of a specific session or print/digital package.
the Future of Bodh Photography…
We have news. BIG, EXCITING NEWS.
Bodh Photography is getting its own studio.
Actually, Jake is getting his own Salon too – Bodh Salon to be exact. After more than 10 years of hard work and dedication, a great rental space came available and the decision was made by Jake to go out on his own. Both businesses will have homes under the same roof starting January 2011. For the photography, it means having a space to invite clients into for bookings and viewings. We also will be able to offer a small studio, mostly for newborn clients. It’s a great alternative for those clients who prefer indoor shooting but perhaps don’t have adequate space or lighting (ie. newborns!).
Jake has literally been working round the clock to get it ready for opening. My husband and I don’t see a lot of each other these days
It’s also the reason why the blogging has taken a brief hiatus. My apologies but having a crazy active 11 month old and 2 dogs, maintaining a household and trying to prepare for Christmas has been my focus. And to top it off me and baby are both sick so that just sucks (I totally caught it from her, arghhh).
To celebrate, we’re having a salon & studio Open House.
January 16, 1:00-4:00pm, 115 Woolwich Street in Guelph.
(Please excuse the colour of the invite on here, totally not what it looks like at all in print!)
Everyone is invited! Be sure to stop by that day for some yummy food and a look around. We’ve Jake’s worked so hard these past couple months and I assure you the new space is worth the visit! All I’ll say is the wallpaper we chose looks amazing
Oh, and stay tuned for two newborn session posts. They were the last before we started the renovating madness. Crazy to think Christmas Day is less then 3 weeks away! Which also means the 2010 year is coming to close, AND, my baby will be turning 1! *Cry* This year went by so fast.
So much good stuff to come, I can feel it!
We've gotta start somewhere.
Hello family, friends, fans and future clients,
Bodh Photography now has a blog. Please excuse the sparse content. We promise to get things going soon.
Come back often to keep up with our family, our photography and some sneak peeks from client photo shoots.
Michelle & Jake
